Ishii Family Honjin: A Timeless Masterpiece on the Old Sanyo Road
Standing with quiet dignity along the historic Sanyo Road in Yakage, Okayama, the Ishii Family Honjin remains a living testament to the Edo period. Stepping into its vast 3,300-square-meter grounds feels like stepping back in time. As a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property, every corner of the estate allows you to truly feel the weight of its centuries-old history.
This was a prestigious sanctuary where feudal lords and court nobles rested during their long journeys. Its archives reveal fascinating stories from the past: from the elegant stay of Princess Atsu (Tensho-in) on her way to marry Shogun Tokugawa Iesada, to the astonishing account of an elephant—sent as a gift to the Shogun—staying overnight.
Comprising dozens of buildings that once housed both the prestigious inn and a thriving sake brewery, this architectural treasure has been preserved with pride. From the subtle scratches on the wooden pillars to the faint scent of tatami mats, the estate breathes with the vibrant energy and profound stillness of a bygone era.
